Dolphin nebula
The Dolphin Nebula (Sharpless 308) is a faint but stunning cosmic bubble located approximately 5,200 light-years away in the constellation Canis Major. This nebula, resembling a leaping dolphin, is an emission nebula formed by a massive Wolf-Rayet star (EZ Canis Majoris, WR 6) shedding its outer layers in a powerful stellar wind.
The expanding shell of ionized gas glows predominantly in blue due to the presence of ionized oxygen, creating a delicate and ethereal appearance against the backdrop of space. Spanning nearly 60 light-years in diameter, it is one of the largest Wolf-Rayet bubbles known. The Dolphin Nebula is a pre-supernova remnant, meaning it represents a late stage in the evolution of its central massive star before it eventually explodes as a supernova.
